December 9, 2008. Patrick Fitzgerald arrests Democratic governor Rod Blagojevich. The reaction among liberals and congressional Democrats is immediate and unequivocal: Blagojevich needs to step aside or resign.
October 28, 2005. Fitzgerald indicts conservative Chief of Staff to the Vice President of the United States Lewis "Scooter" Libby. The reaction among conservatives and congressional Republicans is immediate and unequivocal: Fitzgerald needs to step aside or resign.
This difference is but one reason why a comparison between Democratic and Republican cultures of corruption is inapt.
Right Ross?
UPDATE: Evidence of guilty conscience? (I can't imagine what would lead Republicans to suppose a president from the other party would seek to influence the course of an investigation by firing the investigating U.S. Attorney.)
